Dry season – April to October
In April, temperatures begin to fall, heralding the start of the dry season, which is defined by little to no rain and sunshine-filled days. As the season progresses, the undergrowth thins, water-resources shrink and game are drawn to the remaining water points.
While this is the dry season climatically, it is actually the flood season for the Okavango Delta as the water which fills this impressive wetland takes some months to filter southwards from the Angolan highlands.
During this season you can expect:
- Wildlife viewing to be its sensational best in Chobe National Park, Savute and Moremi Game Reserve
- To get close to large herds of elephants and buffalo on a boat trip on the Chobe River
- Wonderful sightings of the lion prides of the Savute Marsh region
- Incredible game viewing, with strong predator populations in Moremi’s secluded forest area
- Animals congregating around the open floodplains and water channels
- Mokoro excursions which provide a unique window on the Delta’s waterworld
We recommend
Stay at your choice of two Superior Expeditions; both include 2 nights at our award-winning &BEYOND Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge.
The Superior Explorer Expedition was designed for those looking for a full Botswana wilderness adventure, whereas the Superior Delta Expedition focuses on the Okavango Delta and is ideal for those with limited travel time.
Wet season – November to March
As the rains begin, so the grasslands grow denser. While a lot of wildlife remains in the heart of the Delta, the animals begin to explore wider areas as water sources aren’t as scarce. Game viewing in the Delta, at this time of the year, promises to astound!
One of the major attractions of the wet season is the annual zebra migration into the Nxai Pan region, which also attracts a large number of predators.
During this season you can expect:
- Close-up views large herds of elephants and buffalo on a boat trip on the Chobe River
- Sightings of the Savute Marsh’s elephant-hunting lion prides
- Close-up views of Bushmen rock paintings in Savute’s Gubatsaa Hills
- Incredible game viewing, with strong predator populations in Moremi’s secluded forest area
- To witness the breeding season which attracts various predators
- Delta birdwatching is at its best, with migrants from Europe, Asia and other African regions present

Our Highlights Expeditions both include time at the Nxai Pan National Park where the annual zebra migration can be witnessed. The drawcard of Nxai Pan is the waterhole in the midst of a large grassy plain, which makes for wonderful sightings.
The Botswana Highlights Expedition focuses on Botswana’s most prized and diverse regions, whereas our Scenic Highlights Expedition combines only the Okavango and Nxai Pan, aimed at those with limited travel time.
