Driving from Nairobi to Masai Mara

Question

We are visiting Kenya (and Africa) for the first time in Oct. We will be visiting the Masai Mara for 3 nights/ 4 days. We are happy to fly, but would love to see some of the culture of Kenya and considering driving.

Whilst first timers in Kenya, we have travelled the far east extensively on road trips and motorbikes and like to go off the beaten track and don’t mind long drives. We have also done some offload 4×4 driving both in uk and across the world (but not Africa) and enjoy a bumpy ride.

However, we cannot find a recent post which answers the following –

  • #1. Is it safe to drive this distance in kenya – We are hearing conflicting views.
  • #2.Once the road stops – how easy is it to navigate to Talek?

We are travelling as 2 adults and a 7 year old

Thanks!

Answer ( 1 )

  1. The Roads up to the gates are good. Takes about 4 Hours to the Sekenani/ Talek gate. It is safe to drive along that road. Unless you stop at the various towns along the way, there isn’t that much to see. Considering you have a young one with you, I would suggest you take the flight and visit some villages in the maasai mara.
