Lions do belong to Panthera genus and Leo group species. Cats family. Well actually the exact answer is lion is in the Felidae family, a big family of cats. But if you see deeper, lion is a far related to cat, but more closely related to tiger, jaguar, leopard, snow leopard in the same genus called Panthera.
