Planning for Kilimanjaro from Arusha

I’ll be backpacking and as such won’t be doing a lot of packaged tours. I was wondering, can I just sign up for a budget Kili climb once I get into Arusha, or Dar Es Salaam, and expect to get on the mountain the next day? Or is there a limit and I really ought to book in advance. (I really want to avoid going through an expensive tour operator here in the states if I can)

Also, same questions for a budget safari to the serengeti and Ngorongoro. Can I book once I get into Arusha and expect to get out there in the next day?

  1. If you’re backpacking you’ll probably be staying on the street that runs next to the Golden Rose and the bus station. There’s a lot of choices on guest houses (real cheap) on this street, and a lot of choices on touring operators on this street. Arusha is the place, and not Dar Es Salaam as your Questions suggests!
I don’t think that you’ll be able to walk right in and book something for the next day, especially for a climb. I would suggest that if you want some contact information for budget safari’s that you send me an e-mail and I’ll put you in touch with some of them who are located on this street that specializes in backpacking. Send me the details of what you want to do to and I’ll get back to you with some contact details.

I think if you are pressed for time that you’ll need to have this arranged before you get there, otherwise you’ll be spending a lot of your time trying to arrange and/or join up with a group safari.
