  1. Elephants. Buffalo. Giraffe. Zebra. Lions. Hyena. Hippo, usually. Warthogs. Baboons. Monkeys. Rhinos if you’re lucky. Leopards if you are lucky. Cheetah if you are very lucky. Wild dogs if you are very lucky. Various antelope species.
The animals you can expect to see on an African safari will depend on where you go on safari.
Elephants are ubiquitous. But other animals are found only in certain areas. Or not found in areas you might expect.
For example, Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe is a fantastic safari destination. But you won’t see any giraffe there. Or rhino’s for that matter.
Botswana is equally famed as a safari destination. Elephants are plentiful in Botswana. But you need a lot of luck to see rhino and leopard.
For black rhinos, one of the best places to see them is Etosha National Park in Namibia. And for white rhinos, head to the Kruger National Park or Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve in South Africa.
For leopards, your best option is the Sabi Sand Game Reserve in South Africa. Or South Luangwa National Park in Zambia.

For cheetah, you can try Phinda Game Reserve in South Africa, or the Serengeti in Tanzania. And some smaller reserves also have reliable cheetah sightings. At Karongwe Game Reserve in South Africa, you are very likely to see cheetahs and can approach them on foot.
This warthog got the fright of its life when it ran into a pair of resting cheetahs. The cheetahs jumped up and tried to catch the “streaky bacon”. But this little “Phumbaa” was too fast for them and managed to get away.
The greatest number and variety of mammals can be found in South Africa’s Kruger National Park. It is also the most affordable, most accessible, and least seasonal major game reserve in Africa. (In other words, great year round game viewing regardless of the season).
