What to do after hiking Kilimanjaro?

Question

Hi!

I will be hiking Kilimanjaro in August and am looking for suggestions on what to do afterward.  I will be traveling with my dad who’s in his 60’s and it’s just the two of us.  I have traveled extensively through Africa so I know the way things work in general.  We would like to do something fun in that part of the world before leaving.

Some of the things we are considering:

  1. – Zanzibar (I have been years ago but he has not.  I’ve heard it’s a lot more touristy now, not sure if that’s true).
  2. – Madagascar to explore and relax
  3. – Some island just to sit on the beach (Seychelles, Mauritius, etc.)
  4. – The Indian Ocean coast of Tanzania or Kenya

What do you think?

Thanks so much!

  1. I’d stick with staying in Tanzania- either the coast at Pangani or  Pemba (or even Mafia). All of these would be less busy than Zanzibar, but reasonably easy to get to from Kili. Seychelles/Mauritius/Madagascar will all involve going via Nairobi and probably an overnight stay too.

The Kenya coast in many places is more busy than Zanzibar so probably wouldn’t work for you, and where it’s not busy, it is lovely, but I don’t think would give you anything the Tanzanian coast wouldn’t, other than extra travel to get there.
