Tarangire Park is one of the most underrated parks in Africa, although it certainly deserves attention. It’s a place where elephants walk lazily around the plains like cattle, where lions roar and bark zebras. An additional reason to visit Tarangire Park – magnificent epic baobab stands, termite mounds, as well as grassy plains of savanna and extensive swamps. Baobab is undoubtedly a recognizable symbol of Africa.

As the great writer Ryszard Kapuściński wrote: “Like elephants among other animals, like baobabs among trees: they are second to none”. Tarangire Baobabs can reach up to 30 m in height, some trunks have a diameter of 11 m, and some trees have reached the age of about 1000 years; the oldest recorded baobab, reaching an estimated age of 6,000, was in South Africa. It can be seen that elephants love baobab bark, although it is rare that they can kill a tree; most baobabs grow back on the bark without causing permanent damage.

The main source of fresh water for wildlife is the Tarangire River flowing through the Park (from which the Park’s name comes). The Tarangire ecosystem has over 700 lions, which are often motivated to observe. Less visible but still present are leopards and cheetahs. Tarangire is also a large herd of elephants, zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, bison and other herbivores. With over 450 species of birds, Tarangire is sometimes considered the best place to observe birds in Tanzania. Tarangire during the dry season is reportedly the largest concentration of elephants in the world.

Tarangire National Park is located 130 km from Arusha and 70 km from Lake Manyara Park. There are 2 gates – the main park gate, which is 7 km away via a good access road from the village of Kigongoni and the Boundary Hill gate along the northeastern border. The park does not rent vehicles. The area of ​​the Park is 265.8 km², the official name is Tarangire National Park, founded in 1970.
